I've been a long time listener of Houston-area talk show host Pat Gray on 950 KPRC AM. Last November 20th, I went online to 950kprc.com only to find that, without explanation, Pat's show was not available as a podcast. In fact, every mention of Pat Gray on the entire web site had been removed. The next day, Tuesday, after scouring the internet for information about what had happened, I came across patgray.com. There I learned of Pat's plan to continue his show as a podcast. Sure enough, on Monday, November 27th, there was Pats first own podcast on patgray.com.
The most amazing thing of all is the perseverance of Pat's listeners. Pat said on today's podcast that his web site has received 848,000 since last Tuesday. Patgray.com did not even exist until last Tuesday! It was not advertised anywhere. This 848,000 hits came from people whom, given no explanation from 950 KPRC as to why their beloved host was gone, relentlessly searched and found Pat's just launched web site.
At the moment, Pat is 'feeling' out the whole podcast thing. Though not new to the technology, this past summer his former employer had began offering podcast archives of his show for download, I don't believe he thought he'd one day have a show based primarily on a podcast. It could be that his former employer actually helped paved the way for his new format. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise. Pat and the rest of us will have to wait and see what the future has in store.
